Richard Widmark, né le 26 décembre 1914 à Sunrise (Minnesota) et mort le 24 mars 2008 à Roxbury (Connecticut), est un acteur et producteur de cinéma américain.

Richard Widmark est né à Sunrise dans le Minnesota, a grandi à Princeton, et vécut également quelque temps à Henry (Illinois). Son père est Carl Henry Widmark (1892-1968), fils d'immigrés suédois, sa mère Mae Ethel Barr Nelson (1897-1956). Il fut élève au Lake Forest College, où il étudia le métier d'acteur avant d'y enseigner une fois diplômé.
Richard Widmark débute à la radio en 1937 dans Les Misérables sur MBS avec Orson Welles. Licencié en sciences politiques, au début des années 1940 il tente sa chance à Broadway où il joue Kiss and Tell de F. Hugh Herbert. Il joue en 1946 à Chicago Dream girl lorsqu'il signe un contrat avec 20th Century Fox. Au cinéma le grand public le découvre en 1947 dans le film Le Carrefour de la mort de Henry Hathaway. Il y tenait le rôle d'un gangster psychopathe pour lequel il a été nommé à l'Oscar du meilleur acteur dans un second rôle. La scène où il pousse une infirme du haut d'un escalier dans un grand éclat de rire restera gravée dans les mémoires. Il joue de nouveau un malfrat, cette fois ambitieux et mégalomane dans Les Forbans de la nuit (1950) de Jules Dassin et un pickpocket dans Le Port de la drogue (1952) de Samuel Fuller, deux chefs-d'œuvre du film noir.
Il échappe toutefois au registre du personnage criminel dans certains de ses films. Il joue ainsi un policier intègre et consciencieux dans Panique dans la rue (1950) d'Elia Kazan. Dans Alamo (1960), il incarne une légende de l'Ouest, Jim Bowie, venu défendre la future République du Texas. Dans Les Cheyennes (1964) de John Ford, il est un officier de cavalerie qui prend conscience de l'injustice faite au peuple indien. Il joue en 1968 Dan Madigan, un ancien sergent de la police new-yorkaise qui mène des enquêtes criminelles en Europe dans Police sur la ville, un rôle qu'il reprendra, pour la télévision, en 1972, dans les six épisodes de 90 minutes de la série policière Madigan. Après cette incursion à la télévision, Widmark retourne au cinéma, mais y tient de plus en plus souvent des rôles de second plan, comme dans Le Crime de l'Orient-Express de Sidney Lumet ou Morts suspectes de Michael Crichton. En 1995, la cinémathèque française lui rend hommage, en sa présence, en programmant 27 de ses films.
Richard Widmark a été marié de 1942 à 1997 avec la scénariste de cinéma Jean Hazlewood. Une fille, Ann Heath Widmark, naît de cette union. Après la mort de sa première épouse, il se remarie en 1999 avec Susan Blanchard, qui fut la troisième épouse de Henry Fonda. Il meurt le 24 mars 2008, à son domicile de Roxbury (Connecticut). Il est inhumé avec sa première épouse dans le Great Oak Cemetary de Roxbury.
