Greek soprano Jeannette Pilou, passes away aged 83

Prominent Greek soprano Jeannette Pilou, whose career included performances at international stages and the Greek National Opera, passed away on Monday aged 83.

Pilou was born on the 11th of November 1937 in Alexandria, Egypt, of Greek parents.

She began her vocal training in Egypt and continued in Italy under Carla Castellani. She made her debut at Teatro Smeraldo di Milano as Violetta in La traviata (1959). Her international career unfolded quickly. She specialised in Italian and French works.

Recognised during her lifetime with several awards, Pilou was made a Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by France and was one of the founders of the “Maria Callas Scholarship” organisation.

The director and staff of the Greek National Opera expressed their profound sadness at her passing.
