Former Vichy French official Maurice Papon has fled to avoid being jailed for organizing the deportation of 1,590 Jews to Nazi death camps.

Maurice PaponAuthorities ordered an international arrest warrant to track down the 89-year-old Papon, whose six-month trial opened old wounds about French collaboration with the Nazis.

"There is only one honorable response to this final challenge - exile, no matter how painful it is for a man going into his 90th year," Papon said in a statement.

In 1998 he was found guilty and sentenced to 10 years. But he was allowed to remain free pending his appeal and his passport was not revoked.

Papon's disappearance - which enraged the families of Holocaust victims - came a day before a hearing on his appeal. He had been required to report to jail yesterday.
