Her husband, Stephen Eckelberry, said she died on Wednesday after a three-year battle with ampullary cancer.

Known for her full lips and thick, wavy hair, Black portrayed women who were troubled or threatened.

She got her acting break in 1969 in Easy Rider playing a drug-taking prostitute alongside Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda.

She went on to win a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination for her performance as Rayette Dipesto, a waitress who dates an upper-class dropout played by Nicholson in 1970’s Five Easy Pieces.

Black also starred in Nashville, The Day of the Locust, Airport 1975, The Great Gatsby and alongside Oliver Reed in Burnt Offerings.

By the end of the 1970s, she was appearing mostly in television where her credits included guest appearances on series including Law & Order and Party of Five.

But despite working constantly over the next 30 years, Black remained more of a cult idol than a major Hollywood star.

She was married four times. She is survived by Mr Eckelberry, son Hunter Carson and daughter Celine Eckelberry.

Her death was announced on Facebook by her filmmaker husband who wrote: “It is with great sadness that I have to report that my wife and best friend, Karen Black has just passed away, only a few minutes ago.

Thank you all for all your prayers and love, they meant so much to her as they did to me. Stephen Eckelberry
