ATHENS — Charles Russell Sr., 94, of Alexandria, Kentucky, formerly of Athens, Ohio, passed away at home on April 26, 2017. Born on May 15, 1922, he was the son of the late George and Janet Russell. On April 10, 1943, he married Melva Fields. She preceded him in death in 2015.
Charles is survived by his loving sons, Charles (Paulette) Russell Jr., pastor of New Hope Christian Center, Newport, Ky., and Tim (Amy) Russell, pastor of First Church of Christ, Greendale, Ind.; grandchildren, Aric (Becky) Russell, Shelly (Mark) Hegyi, Michael Russell, Kyle (Theresa) Russell and Megan (Brandon) Hatfield; 12 great-grandchildren, Alicia, Hope, Jesse, Cole, Brooke, Dane, Hunter, Isabelle, Leah, Ethan, Jacob and Addelyn; and several nieces and nephews.
Along with his wife and parents, Charles was preceded in death by his brothers, Frank Ransdell Russell and George Trunic Russell; and sisters, Isabelle Riggle and Edna Goff Clark.
Charles was a World War II veteran, a corporal in the United States Air Force. Charles worked for Royal McBee Industries for 28 years and retired from Ohio University after 17 years, where he worked in the graphic arts department. Charles also served for 15 years as a lay minister, and was instrumental in building several churches. He enjoyed playing golf. He was a member of Greendale Church of Christ, where he served as an elder. Charles will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved him.

A visitation will be held at Floral Hills Funeral Home on Monday, May 1, from 11:30 a.m. until time of service at 1 p.m. Charles’ grandson, Aric Russell, will be the officiant. Burial will follow in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. Online condolences can be left at www.floralhillsmemorialgardens.com.
