Joachim Rønneberg was born on August 30, 1919. Ålesunden was a Norwegian resistance man who was a member of Kompani Linge in the years 1941-1945. He is best known for carrying out the heavy water action in February 1943 at Vemork.

Many believe that this is one of the most important sabotage reactions that were carried out during the Second World War. The aim was to prevent Germans from using the heavy water from the Hydro & Rjukan plant to develop an atomic bomb.

Because of the heavy water action and other assignments for Kompani Linge he received several Norwegian and foreign awards, including the War Cross with Sword and St. Olav medal.

– One of the great heroes

After the war he lived in the birthplace of Ålesund and worked as a journalist and editor at NRK Møre og Romsdal. He ended his career as an editor in 1987.

Prime Minister Erna Solberg (H) says that we will remember Joachim Rønneberg as one of the great heroes of Norwegian war history.

"Rønneberg is one of the great heroes of Norwegian war history and we will remember him as an important part of the resistance movement in Norway", said Solberg to NRK.

Shut up about Vemork

Rønneberg has always been cautious and careful to talk about what he experienced during the war years.

Although he often received questions, the heavy water attacker long kept the secrets of the Second World War for himself. It was not until the 1970s that he decided to share the stories.

– Eventually I realized that people had a claim for an answer. It is important that we all know what has happened. Then it is easier to make the right choices in the future. Those who grow up today must understand that we must always be prepared to fight for peace and freedom, Rønneberg said earlier to NRK.

Since then he has been known for the work he has done to educate children and young people about the dangers of war. In 2015 he received the Defense Crimes of honor for the task, made to transfer the war history to the defense personnel and the Norwegian population.

In the documentary "The Last Saber & # 39 ;," Rønneberg spoke openly about the rise of Ålesund, about what he was involved in the war and the years that followed.

Watch the documentary: only 23 years old, Joachim Rønneberg was chosen to lead the soldiers to stop Nazi Germany's attempt to make an atomic bomb. The action against the heavy water plant in Vemork is so impressive that it is still on the syllabus for the special soldiers of today.

On Saturday, August 30, 2014 Rønneberg was honored with a statue on the town hall square in Ålesund. Aalesund Museum also opened an exhibition based on his life, and on his own 95th birthday.

– Bad without

With Joachim Rønneberg we have lost one of the last witnesses after the war, says mayor of Ålesund, Eva Vinje Aurdal. She believes that it respects the efforts the war hero has made during and after the war.

"I feel we are poor without Joachim Rønneberg with us, but at the same time I think that his clear and clear voice that we should never forget the war live on, says Aurdal.
