McDowell Claire

Claire McDowell est une actrice américaine née le 2 novembre 1877 à New York (État de New York), morte le 23 octobre 1966 à Hollywood (Californie). 

Jeunesse

Claire MacDowell est née à New York le 2 novembre 1877, fille d’Eugene A. MacDowell et de Fanny Reeves. Sa tante, l’actrice Fanny Davenport, lui a donné une formation d’actrice. Le deuxième mari de Fanny Davenport était le frère d’Eugene Melbourne MacDowell. Quand elle avait 17 ans, elle était doublure dans une compagnie théâtrale dirigée par Charles Frohman. Toujours d’une beauté juvénile, McDowell apparaît dans de nombreux courts métrages. Elle a obtenu son diplôme en jouant des personnages et des types de mère. Elle est apparue dans The Mark of Zorro (1920) de Douglas Fairbanks. McDowell a participé à deux des plus grands films de l’ère silencieuse, The Big Parade et Ben-Hur : A Tale of the Christ, dans lesquels elle a joué les deux fois les mères. McDowell’s Broadway crédits inclus Hérode (1909), à avoir et à tenir (1901), et les coeurs sont des atouts (1900). A 38 ans, McDowell a pris sa retraite, mais plus tard elle est retournée à la comédie, en particulier en incarnant des rôles de mères. 

Vie privée et décès

Elle est mariée à l’acteur Charles Hill Mailes de 1906 jusqu’à sa mort en 1937. Le couple apparaît dans de nombreux films muets ensemble, dont La Marque de Zorro Ils ont deux fils Robert et Eugène. Elle meurt à Hollywood, en Californie, le 23 octobre 1966, dix jours avant son 89e anniversaire.
