Defense Secretaries: Dick Cheney (1989-1993)
Before becoming George W. Bush's vice president in 2001, Cheney served George H.W. Bush as secretary of defense. He directed the U.S. invasion of Panama and, most notably, Operation Desert Storm in 1991, which earned him the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
