Clark Susan

Susan Clark (née Nora Golding le 8 mars 1943) est une actrice canadienne. Elle fait ses débuts au cinéma en 1967 dans le film dramatique Banning et, l'année suivante, elle tient le rôle principal féminin dans le thriller policier Coogan's Bluff. Elle joue ensuite dans les films Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here (1969), Colossus: The Forbin Project (1971), Valdez Is Coming (1971), Skin Game (1971), Showdown (1973), The Midnight Man (1974), Airport 1975 (1975), Night Moves (1975), The Apple Dumpling Gang (1975), Murder by Decree (1979), Promises in the Dark (1979) et Porky's (1981). Clark a reçu un Primetime Emmy Award pour la meilleure actrice principale dans une série ou un film limité ou d'anthologie pour avoir joué Babe Didrikson Zaharias dans le téléfilm Babe de 1975, et une autre nomination aux Emmy Awards pour avoir joué Amelia Earhart dans le téléfilm Amelia Earhart de 1976. De 1983 à 1989, elle a joué le rôle de Katherine Papadopolis dans la sitcom américaine Webster, où elle est apparue avec son mari, Alex Karras, recevant une nomination aux Golden Globes pour la meilleure actrice dans une série télévisée musicale ou comique en 1985.

Jeunesse

Clark, née Nora Golding à Sarnia (Ontario), a grandi à Toronto où elle a fréquenté la Northern Secondary School. Elle a fait ses débuts professionnels à l'âge de 15 ans sur scène dans la comédie musicale Silk Stockings, avec Don Ameche. Elle a étudié l'art dramatique à la Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts de Londres et, deux ans plus tard, a joué dans plusieurs pièces classiques et modernes.

Actrice

Au début des années 1960, alors qu'elle vivait à Londres, Clark commença à apparaître à la télévision britannique, notamment dans des émissions comme *The Plane Makers*, *The Sentimental Agent* et *The Benny Hill Show*. Elle fit ses débuts sur les planches londoniennes dans *Poor Bitos*. La pièce et Clark reçurent de bonnes critiques, mais des nouvelles de son père, malade, la contraignirent à retourner au Canada. Elle retourna au Canada en 1965 et apparut dans plusieurs épisodes de la série d'anthologie *Festival*. À partir de 1967, elle fut engagée par Universal Pictures, où elle joua dans plusieurs séries télévisées et fit ses débuts au cinéma dans le film dramatique *Banning*. 

Clark a tenu des rôles principaux dans plusieurs films Universal, notamment Coogan's Bluff avec Clint Eastwood en 1968, Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here avec Robert Redford en 1969, Valdez Is Coming avec Burt Lancaster en 1971, Showdown avec Dean Martin en 1973, Night Moves avec Gene Hackman en 1975, le film catastrophe Airport 1975, The Apple Dumpling Gang avec Bill Bixby en 1975, et un autre film catastrophe, City on Fire, en 1979. Clark a joué dans le téléfilm Babe (1975), incarnant l'athlète polyvalente Babe Didrikson Zaharias. Sa performance lui a valu un Emmy en 1976. En 1976, elle a joué dans un téléfilm biographique de trois heures consacré à l'aviatrice Amelia Earhart, qui retraçait également son mariage avec le célèbre éditeur G. P. Putnam.

Elle a été nommée aux Emmy Awards dans la catégorie Meilleure actrice. Elle a posé seins nus pour Playboy dans le numéro de février 1973, dans un reportage photo intitulé « Les Ziegfeld Girls : Un aperçu éblouissant mettant en vedette Susan Clark, la star du cinéma parlant ». Clark a incarné le Dr Cleo Markham dans Colossus : The Forbin Project, la prostituée Cherry Forever dans Porky's (où Karras jouait également), Elizabeth Murray dans Emily of New Moon, Elaine Moore dans le téléfilm Trapped et Muriel Mulligan dans le téléfilm de 1994 Snowbound : The Jim and Jennifer Stolpa Story. Elle a interprété la meurtrière Beth Chadwick dans l'épisode de Columbo intitulé « Lady in Waiting ». Elle et Karras ont joué un couple marié dans la sitcom Webster pendant six ans, dans les années 1980. En 2006, Clark est apparue au Manitoba Theatre Centre dans la production Warehouse de The Retreat from Moscow, et en 2007 dans la production Mainstage de The Importance of Being Earnest.

Vie privée

Elle a épousé Alex Karras, ancien joueur de football américain devenu acteur, en 1980. Ils se sont rencontrés sur le tournage du film Babe (où il incarnait son mari, le catcheur professionnel George Zaharias). Ils ont ensuite joué ensemble dans la sitcom à succès Webster, interprétant un couple marié. Leur fille Katie est née en 1980. Clark et Karras sont restés mariés pendant 32 ans, jusqu'au décès de ce dernier le 10 octobre 2012.
