Born in 1956 to John Wayne and his third wife, Pilar, the author witnessed the passing of her father from movie star to American icon. Not surprisingly, he was a stern father--harder on his sons than his little girl. Unlike Christina Crawford's book about her mother, Joan, this is no Duke Dearest; Wayne comes off as a fully rounded person, ultimately held in a sympathetic light.
