Our Gracie: The Life of Gracie Fields: A Two Act Play
Gracie Fields was unmatched. One of the world's highest-paid stars she cut hundreds of records, starred in a series of optimistically-titled films whose scenarios reflected the spirit of the Depression, and never lost her immense popularity~her swansong, at 80, was in the Royal Variety Show which she had helped turn into a national institution. This play, based on David Bret's 1995 best-selling book, takes place in London during the 1960s, at a time when Gracie is suffering professional and personal crises.
The arrival of pop has part-convinced her that her kind of music has gone out of fashion~and as she is getting used to semi-retirement she is faced with two blasts from the past~her stepdaughter Irene with whom she travelled the world while at the height of her fame~ and Ted, the Dutch fighter-pilot who swept her off her feet during the war. The play ends with Gracie having regained her confidence, entertaining a relatively new audience with a selection of the songs which made her a household name.
