Frank Feeney, dit Francis Ford, né le 14 août 1881 à Cape Elizabeth près de Portland (Maine) et mort le 5 septembre 1953 à Los Angeles (Californie), est un acteur, scénariste et réalisateur américain. Il est le frère ainé du réalisateur John Ford. Ayant connu une ascension rapide aux premiers temps de l'industrie du cinéma, il a vu sa carrière décliner au moment de l'essor de celle de son frère qu'il a fait débuter. Sa filmographie compte près de 200 films comme réalisateur et près de 500 films comme acteur.

Carrière

Jeunesse

Né Francis Joseph Feeney le 14 août 1881 à Portland (Maine), il est le fils de John Augustine Feeney et de Barbara « Abbey » Curran. Immigrant irlandais, John Feeney était originaire du village de Spiddal, dans le comté de Galway (Irlande), où il était né le 15 juin 1854. En 1878, John s'installe à Portland et ouvre un débit de boissons au 42 Center Street ; l'établissement arbore une devanture trompeuse pour se faire passer pour une épicerie. John en ouvrira quatre autres au cours des années suivantes. Francis Feeney s'engage dans l'armée américaine durant la guerre hispano-américaine, mais il est renvoyé chez lui car il est trop jeune. Après avoir quitté Portland, il s'oriente vers l'industrie cinématographique à New York, travaillant pour David Horsley et Al Christie. Il part ensuite pour le Texas, où il intègre l'antenne de la Star Film Company à San Antonio, sous la direction de Gaston Méliès. Feeney adopte « Ford » comme nom de scène, en référence à la marque automobile. Installé à Los Angeles après avoir quitté San Antonio, Francis entame sa carrière hollywoodienne en travaillant pour Thomas H. Ince au studio Bison ; il y réalise des westerns et y apparaît également en tant qu'acteur.

Travail

Artiste ambitieux et prolifique, Ford s'est mis en scène, au début de sa carrière, dans les rôles de George Armstrong Custer, de Sherlock Holmes (aux côtés de son jeune frère incarnant le Dr Watson) et d'Abraham Lincoln, rôle dans lequel il s'est spécialisé. Dès 1912, Ford réalisait des films en collaboration avec Thomas Ince. Il est rapidement apparu qu'Ince s'attribuait systématiquement le mérite du travail de Ford ; aussi, en 1913, Ford a rejoint l'Universal Film Manufacturing Co., un studio fondé l'année précédente par Carl Laemmle. Son film de 1913, *Lucille Love, Girl of Mystery*, fut le premier serial d'Universal et le premier d'une série d'œuvres très populaires mettant en vedette Grace Cunard, collaboratrice et compagne de Ford. Le serial de 1915 *The Broken Coin* a vu son nombre d'épisodes passer de 15 à 22 face à l'engouement du public, marquant probablement l'apogée de la carrière de Ford.

En 1917, Ford fonda une société indépendante éphémère, Fordart Films — qui sortit en 1918 le film *Berlin via America* avec Phil Kelly — et ouvrit brièvement son propre studio à l'angle de Sunset Boulevard et de Gower Street. Parallèlement, Ford guida son jeune frère ; ils collaborèrent fréquemment en tant que scénaristes, réalisateurs et acteurs sur les projets de l'un et de l'autre, mais dès 1917, il devint évident que l'étoile de John était en train de monter. Le style de réalisation de Frank, bien qu'adapté aux serials, ne parvint pas à évoluer. Le dernier film connu réalisé par Ford est *The Call of the Heart* (1928), une œuvre de 50 minutes conçue pour mettre en vedette « Dynamite the Devil Dog ». Ford a peut-être joué dans plus de 400 films, nombre de ses premières apparitions étant mal documentées et probablement perdues.

Acteur de composition

À partir de la fin des années 1920 et durant les deux décennies suivantes, Ford a mené une carrière d'acteur de composition au visage buriné et de figurant. Il n'est souvent pas crédité au générique, comme ce fut le cas pour son apparition dans *Frankenstein* (1931) de James Whale. L'un de ses rôles les plus marquants fut celui du vieillard dément dans *L'Étrange Incident* (1943), prestation pour laquelle il ne fut pas non plus crédité.

Relation avec John Ford

Le frère cadet de Ford, John M. Feeney, surnommé « Bull », fut un joueur brillant (aux postes de *fullback* et de *defensive tackle*) au sein de l'équipe de football américain du lycée de Portland, championne de l'État. En 1914, « Bull » rejoignit Francis à Hollywood, adopta le nom de John Ford et finit par surpasser la réputation considérable de son aîné. Le fils de Ford, Philip Ford, fut également acteur et réalisateur. Ford est décédé après un diagnostic de cancer. Les relations entre les frères Ford furent, au mieux, empreintes de critiques mutuelles et, parfois, marquées par une franche hostilité. En 1934, Ford rédigea des mémoires inédits intitulés *Up and Down the Ladder* ; l'ouvrage est « rempli de plaintes amères, parfois déchirantes, sur la façon dont les pionniers ayant contribué à bâtir l'industrie avaient été écartés au profit d'hommes plus jeunes ».

À l'époque où Jack Ford travaillait pour son frère à Hollywood, Francis lui fit exécuter une cascade périlleuse : en tant que doublure de son aîné, il devait courir sur le toit d'une gare et sauter sur un train en marche. Pendant l'exécution de la cascade, le cadet lança à son aîné qu'il lui en serait redevable. Bien des années plus tard, alors que le rapport de force s'était inversé, Jack fit attacher Francis à une charrette de foin destinée à être incendiée par des Amérindiens dans le film *Sur la piste des Mohawks* (*Drums Along the Mohawk*). Avant le tournage de la scène, Jack dit à son frère : « Là, tu me paies ma dette, Frank. » La charrette fut enflammée, et Jack Ford n'ordonna à son équipe d'éteindre le feu qu'une fois les flammes parvenues aux liens de cuir qui attachaient Francis au véhicule.
