9th March, 1940 The commander of the Germany navy, Grand Admiral Erich Raeder, today urged Hitler to invade Norway and Sweden as soon as possible.
Raeder, the highest ranking officer in the German Kriegsmarine, believes the British and French will invade and occupy Norway and Sweden imminently under the pretext of helping Finland fight the Soviets. Wary of the Allies controlling virtually all of Scandinavia, Raeder believes Germany should invade first. Doing so will prevent the Allies from gaining land closer to Germany, and also provide the Kriegsmarine with useful ports along the Norwegian west coast.
