Hitler Orders Luftwaffe to Destroy City of Warsaw
16th September, 1939 German troops finally surrounded the Polish capital of Warsaw today, beginning what many believe to be the finally stages of Polish resistance to the invasion.
Adolf Hitler himself has arrived in Poland where he has witnessed German artillery strikes on the city. Senior German officers have explained that Warsaw will not be captured easily, and they have suggested the occupants should be starved until they surrender. Hitler, however, today decided that Warsaw is too well prepared for this, and instead he has ordered the Luftwaffe to begin a massive bombardment of the city in an attempt to completely destroy Polish morale and resistance.
Meanwhile, Poland was dismayed today to receive some more bad news: the USSR has informed Poland it intends to enter the country tomorrow.
With a war soon to be fought on two fronts, and with attacks from all four directions of the compass, Poland is unlikely to survive much longer. Poland had originally hoped allies Britain and France would help fight off the invasion, but no such support has happened. In fact, Britain and France are hoping the German army will be kept busy in Poland for as long as possible, thereby allowing the two allies to build up their own defences in preparation for when Germany finally swings it’s attention towards westen Europe.
