Richard Alexander (né le 19 novembre 1902 à Dallas et mort le 9 août 1989 à Woodland Hills) est un acteur américain qui fit de nombreuses apparitions dans des séries telles que Flash Gordon et Zorro Rides Again mais tint aussi le rôle principal dans À l'Ouest, rien de nouveau. Il est enterré au Forest Lawn Memorial Park de Glendale, en Californie.

Carrière

Cinéma

Richard Alexander a commencé sa carrière cinématographique à l'époque du cinéma muet en 1926. Au cours des premières années de sa carrière, il a reçu de meilleurs seconds rôles, comme celui de l'adjudant Gustav von Seyffertitz dans le film d'espionnage La guerre dans les ténèbres et celui de méchant du cinéma dans  le drame City Girl (1930) de Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, qui fait chanter l'amant de son frère et veut la forcer à l'épouser. En 1930, Alexander joua également le rôle du puissant soldat Haie Westhus dans le film anti-guerre Rien de nouveau en Occident. À cette époque, Alexander était considéré comme une star potentielle par les producteurs de films, mais ces espoirs ne se sont pas réalisés : à partir du début des années 1930, il ne jouait pour la plupart que des seconds rôles plus petits et il n'acceptait presque que des rôles plus importants dans B. -Westerns et séries.

En raison de sa silhouette robuste et grande, il a été principalement obligé de jouer des hommes de main et des criminels stupides pour le reste de sa carrière. Certains des meilleurs rôles de sa carrière ultérieure incluent le compagnon de cellule bourru de Charlie Chaplin dans Les Temps modernes (1936) et son apparition en tant que prince amical et noble dans les séries de films Flash Gordon de la fin des années 1930.

Télévision

À partir des années 1950, Alexander a également joué de petits rôles invités à la télévision américaine émergente. Il est également devenu membre du conseil d'administration de la Screen Actors Guild, où il était censé représenter les figurants et les petits acteurs d'Hollywood. Au total, il est apparu dans environ 290 films jusqu'à sa retraite du cinéma en 1970.

Décès

Il est décédé d'une maladie pulmonaire en 1989 à l'âge de 86 ans et a été enterré au Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
