Richard M. Nixon: The complex president

Publié le par Martin S. Goldman

Richard M Nixon - The complex presidentIn the Makers of America series, Goldman (Nat Turner, 1992) does not flinch from the facts in this straightforward biography of a controversial US president. By using many of Nixon's own words in his writings, and quoting from newspaper accounts and other memoirs, Goldman gives a fresh, ``you-are-there'' feeling to Nixon's ruination of Alger Hiss, his smear campaign against Helen Gahagan Douglas, and his debates against John F. Kennedy.

His handling of Nixon's election as president, the Vietnam War, and especially Watergate rings true; with clarity, he covers the tangled mess of Watergate, the step-by-step dissolution of Nixon's authority, and his resignation. Goldman notes how in his final years, Nixon worked to recast himself as an ``elder statesman and valued adviser,'' and to some extent succeeded.

Those researching the origins of the nickname ``Tricky Dick,'' the significance of the Checkers speech, or the full impact of Watergate will find it here. (index, b&w photos, not seen, bibliography) (Biography. 10-14).
