Davidson Max

Max Davidson est un acteur allemand né le 23 mai 1875 à Berlin (Allemagne), mort le 4 septembre 1950 à Woodland Hills (États-Unis). 

Cinéma

Né à Berlin de parents juifs, Davidson a émigré aux États-Unis dans les années 1890 où il a commencé à travailler dans le théâtre de stock et le vaudeville. Il entra dans le cinéma muet en 1912. Il réalisa une série de films mettant en vedette le personnage d'Izzy pour Reliance Pictures Company en 1914. Les films comprenaient Izzy se trompe de bouteille, Izzy et son rival, Izzy et le diamant, Comment Izzy est resté fidèle à son poste, Comment Izzy a été sauvé, Izzy, le détective, Izzy's Night Out, Izzy, l'opérateur et Izzy et le bandit. Au milieu de l'adolescence, Davidson était apparu dans son premier long métrage, Don Quichotte d'Edward Dillon (1915), suivi par D.W. L'intolérance de Griffith et les marionnettes de Tod Browning (tous deux en 1916). Il a joué aux côtés du jeune Jackie Coogan dans deux longs métrages muets, The Rag Man (1923) et Old Clothes (1925). En 1923, il apparut dans le long métrage de Mack Sennett, The Extra Girl avec Mabel Normand, et en 1927, il réalisa un rare long métrage à Columbia, Pleasure Before Business, tout en jouant un rôle un peu plus sérieux en tant que serviteur dans le véhicule Pola Negri de la Première Guerre mondiale Hôtel Impérial.

En 1926, il commença à travailler pour Hal Roach, incarnant des personnages de bandes dessinées juifs stéréotypés. Après avoir figuré dans la comédie de Mabel Normand Raggedy Rose, Davidson s'est vu confier sa propre série de courts-métrages, apparaissant comme un homme malheureux et mis en cause dans des titres tels que Jewish-Prudence et Don't Tell Everything. Il a également figuré dans d'autres séries de Hal Roach, notamment le court métrage « féminin Laurel et Hardy » avec Anita Garvin et Marion Byron. Les courts métrages les plus connus de Davidson sont Call of the Cuckoo (1927), avec des camées de Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy et Charley Chase ; et Pass the Gravy (1928), récemment relancé, jugé « culturellement significatif » par la Bibliothèque du Congrès et sélectionné pour être conservé dans le National Film Registry.

Déclin

La caricature juive exagérée de Max Davidson était suffisamment populaire auprès du public pour soutenir une série de courts métrages muets, mais l'arrivée du son a donné une voix à Davidson. Même si l'accent allemand natif de Davidson n'était pas si épais qu'il gâchait ses chances dans le cinéma parlant, son dialecte donnait à son personnage à l'écran une dimension nouvelle et potentiellement offensante, et Hal Roach a prévenu toute protestation en arrêtant complètement la série. Davidson est apparu dans quelques-uns des premiers films parlants de Roach, notamment le court métrage d'Edgar Kennedy Hurdy Gurdy (1929) et le court métrage Our Gang Moan and Groan, Inc. (1929). Mais le caractère ethnique établi de Davidson était trop large pour survivre en tant qu'attraction principale, et il a passé le reste de sa carrière à jouer presque exclusivement de petits rôles.

Le rôle le plus important de Davidson dans les films sonores fut celui de l'acolyte juif bon enfant du cowboy Tom Tyler dans le western de 1936 Roamin' Wild. Il était encore familier à la communauté du cinéma et de la comédie ; Lorsque Charlie Chaplin avait besoin de types ethniques pour représenter les habitants d'un ghetto juif dans Le Dictateur (1940), Max Davidson fut choisi. Il a continué à jouer des commerçants ethniques, face aux Trois Stooges dans No Census, No Feeling (1940) et aux East Side Kids dans Clancy Street Boys (1943), entre autres films. Sa dernière apparition à l'écran était dans le film Adventure de Clark Gable de 1945. Davidson est décédé le 4 septembre 1950 à Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, Californie.
