William Edward Leuchtenburg, né le 28 septembre 1922 à Ridgewood (New York) et mort le 28 janvier 2025 à Chapel Hill (Caroline du Nord), est un historien américain. Il est professeur émérite d'histoire William Rand Kenan Jr. à l'Université de Caroline du Nord à Chapel Hill et un spécialiste reconnu de la vie et de la carrière de Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Jeunesse et éducation

Leuchtenberg, originaire du Queens, à New York, est né le 28 septembre 1922. Il était d'origine allemande et irlandaise. Dans la série documentaire Prohibition de Ken Burns, il a raconté, enfant, comment son père avait été dénoncé pour exploitation d'une distillerie illégale pendant la Prohibition. Il a obtenu sa licence en 1943 à l'Université Cornell, où il a été admis à la Phi Beta Kappa Society. Il a ensuite obtenu son doctorat à l'Université Columbia en 1951.

Historien

Leuchtenberg a enseigné à l'Université Columbia et à l'Université de Caroline du Nord à Chapel Hill. Il a remporté le Prix de littérature de Caroline du Nord en 2007. Il a été consultant pour la série documentaire Prohibition de Ken Burns, diffusée pour la première fois sur PBS en octobre 2011. Il a été président de l'American Historical Association, de l'Organisation des historiens américains et de la Société des historiens américains. Eric Foner est le seul autre historien à revendiquer cette distinction.

Vie et décès

Le mariage de Leuchtenberg avec Jean McIntire, qui s'est soldé par un divorce, a donné naissance à trois enfants. Il a ensuite épousé Jean Anne Williams. Leuchtenberg était un démocrate, délégué à la Convention nationale démocrate de 1952 et militant pour des causes libérales. Leuchtenberg a eu 100 ans le 28 septembre 2022 et est décédé à son domicile de Chapel Hill, en Caroline du Nord, le 28 janvier 2025, à l'âge de 102 ans.
