Sara Jane Moore, née Kahn le 15 février 1930 à Charleston (Virginie-Occidentale) et morte le 24 septembre 2025 à Franklin (Tennessee), est une criminelle américaine ayant tenté d'assassiner le président des États-Unis Gerald Ford en 1975 à San Francisco. Condamnée à l'emprisonnement à perpétuité pour sa tentative de meurtre, elle purge environ 32 ans et sort de prison le 31 décembre 2007. Elle est, avec Lynette Fromme, l'une des deux seules femmes à avoir tenté de tuer un président américain, les deux ayant attenté à la vie de Ford à environ trois semaines d'intervalle.
Jeunesse
Sara Jane Moore naît à Charleston (Virginie-Occidentale). Elle est la fille de Ruth (née Moore) et Olaf Kahn. Ses grands-parents paternels sont des immigrants allemands. Elle fait des études d'infirmerie, puis travaille un temps au Women's Army Corps. Divorcée cinq fois, elle a quatre enfants.
Tentative d'assassinat
À San Francisco le 22 septembre 1975, Sara Jane Moore a tenté d'assassiner le 38e président des États-Unis, Gerald Ford, après qu'il eut prononcé un discours devant le World Affairs Council. Elle a tiré deux coups de feu sur le président Gerald Ford avec un revolver .38 Special, qui ont tous deux manqué leur cible. Gerald Ford avait survécu à une précédente tentative d'assassinat 17 jours plus tôt ; après cette deuxième tentative, il portait un trench-coat pare-balles en public. Le 15 janvier 1976, Sara Jane Moore a plaidé coupable de tentative d'assassinat et a été condamnée à la prison à vie pour cette tentative. Lors de son audience de détermination de la peine, Sara Jane Moore a déclaré : « Suis-je désolée d'avoir essayé ? Oui et non. Oui, car cela n'a servi à rien, si ce n'est à gâcher le reste de ma vie. Et non, je ne regrette pas d'avoir essayé, car à l'époque, cela semblait être une expression légitime de ma colère ».
Elle a purgé sa peine à la prison fédérale pour femmes de Dublin en Californie, où elle a travaillé au sein du programme de travail pénitentiaire UNICOR pour 1,25 dollar de l'heure en tant que comptable principale des détenues. Sara Jane Moore était inscrite au registre du Bureau fédéral des prisons sous le numéro 04851-180. En 1979, Sara Jane Moore s'échappe, mais elle est capturée plusieurs heures plus tard. Lors d'une interview qu'il a donné en 2004, Gerald Ford décrit Sara Jane Moore comme étant « folle » et il déclare également qu'il avait continué à faire des apparitions publiques, même après deux tentatives d'assassinat dans un laps de temps si court, parce qu'« un président doit être agressif, doit rencontrer le peuple ».
Lors d'une interview donné en 2009, Sara Jane Moore déclare que son objectif était de déclencher une révolution violente afin d'apporter des changements aux États-Unis. Des extraits d'une interview de Sara Jane Moore par Latif Nasser apparaissent dans un épisode de l'émission de radio Radiolab intitulé « Oliver Sipple », diffusé le 22 septembre 2017. Dans l'interview, Sara Jane Moore discute de la scène du jour où elle a tenté d'assassiner Gerald Ford et de son point de vue sur le fait d'avoir été arrêtée par Oliver Sipple. En février 2019 à l'âge de 89 ans, Sara Jane Moore est arrêtée, pour avoir violé ses conditions de libération conditionnelle en omettant d'informer son agent de libération conditionnelle d'un voyage qu'elle avait effectué à l'extérieur du pays, elle a ensuite été libérée en août 2019. Suburban Fury, un documentaire de Robinson Devor de 2024 sur Sara Jane Moore, filmée après sa sortie de prison, a été sélectionné pour être projeté dans la section Main Slate du Festival du film de New York 2024.

Sara Jane Moore meurt le 24 septembre 2025 à l'âge de 95 ans, à Franklin (Tennessee).
