Currie Finlay
William Finlay Currie (20 janvier 1878 – 9 mai 1968) était un acteur écossais de théâtre, de cinéma et de télévision. Il a été acclamé pour ses rôles d'Abel Magwitch dans le film britannique Les Grandes Espérances (1946) et de Balthazar dans le film américain Ben-Hur (1959). Au cours de sa carrière de 70 ans, Currie a joué dans sept films nominés pour l'Oscar du meilleur film, dont Le Tour du monde en 80 jours (1956) et Ben-Hur.
Acteur
Currie est né à Édimbourg, en Écosse. Il a fréquenté le George Watson's College et a travaillé comme organiste et chef de chœur. En 1898, il a obtenu son premier emploi dans la troupe de théâtre de Benjamin Fuller, avec laquelle il s'est produit pendant près de dix ans. Après avoir émigré aux États-Unis à la fin des années 1890, Currie et sa femme, Maude Courtney, ont monté un spectacle de chant et de danse. Il a tourné son premier film, The Old Man, en 1931. Il a joué un prêtre dans le film de 1943, Undercover, produit par Ealing sur la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Son rôle le plus célèbre au cinéma est celui du condamné Abel Magwitch dans Les Grandes Espérances (1946) de David Lean. Il a également été salué pour son interprétation de John Brown, le serviteur des Highlands de la reine Victoria dans The Mudlark (1950).
Au cours des années suivantes, Currie apparaît dans des films épiques hollywoodiens, notamment dans les rôles de Saint Pierre dans Quo Vadis (1951), de Balthazar, l'un des Trois Rois Mages, dans le film multi-oscarisé Ben-Hur (1959) ; du pape dans François d'Assise (1961) ; et d'un sénateur âgé et sage dans La Chute de l'Empire romain (1964). Il apparaît dans People Will Talk avec Cary Grant ; et incarne le père aigri de Robert Taylor, Sir Cedric, dans la version Technicolor d'Ivanhoé (1952) de la MGM. Ivanhoé met en valeur ses talents comiques, ainsi que sa volonté de tourner encore quelques scènes d'action à plus de 70 ans.
Parmi les rôles télévisés de Currie, on compte Sir Gideon Murray dans La Fille au Mouton d'Alexander Reid, diffusé par la BBC le 6 octobre 1953. En 1962, il joue dans un épisode de l'émission The DuPont Show of the Week de NBC, L'Ordalie du Dr Shannon, une adaptation du roman d'A.J. Cronin, La Voie de Shannon. Currie est le sujet de l'émission This Is Your Life en février 1963, où il est surpris par Eamonn Andrews au BBC Television Theatre de Londres. En 1966, Currie incarne M. Lundie, le pasteur, dans l'adaptation télévisée de la comédie musicale Brigadoon. Sa dernière apparition est dans la série télévisée Le Saint, avec Roger Moore. Currie a joué un chef mafieux mourant dans l'épisode en deux parties « Vendetta for the Saint », diffusé à titre posthume en 1969.
Vie privée et décès
Currie était marié à l'actrice américaine Maude Courtney. Ils eurent deux enfants, George et Marion. Sur le tard, Currie devint un antiquaire très respecté, spécialisé dans les pièces de monnaie et les métaux précieux. Il fut également un collectionneur de longue date des œuvres de Robert Burns. Currie décéda le 9 mai 1968 à Gerrards Cross, dans le Buckinghamshire, à l'âge de 90 ans. Ses cendres furent dispersées au crématorium de Breakspear, à Ruislip, dans le Middlesex.
